Tested: Rab Women’s Electron Jacket

When I was given the opportunity through work to trial a Rab Electron Women’s Jacket, I was intrigued and excited to try it out for myself, especially after selling these jackets to customers for many years. I have been aware of the high quality of Rab Equipment for several years, through seeing my Mum and fellow colleagues using the kit on a regular basis, for hill walking, mountaineering and skiing. The question is, what makes a good down jacket? The style, colour, durability, warmth? The Rab Electron Women’s jacket has... Read More

Tested: Rab Alpha Flux Jacket

I was lucky enough to get to test the Rab Alpha Flux Jacket. I was given it in November, probably a bit late in the year to get the full benefit, especially in the frozen North of Aberdeenshire. Anyway the first time I used it was on a mountain bike run on a fairly cool day and I loved it. The first thing I noticed when putting it on was the length. It has a slightly longer cut than a lot of modern garments which gives that little extra insulation... Read More

Tested: Rab Alpha Direct Jacket

I have used this jacket for a year now and it has become one of my favourite bits of kit. It’s warm comfy and regulates temperature better than anything else I have used. The face fabric is wind and water resistant, it’s light, packs down well, and drys off extremely fast. Alpha Polartec Alpha fabric came out a few years ago with a marketing campign showing pictures of sweaty people and the whole Alpha program trundled along without much interest. But the good people at Rab kept the faith with... Read More

Tested: Mountain Equipment Lhotse Jacket

I’ve been using the Mountain Equipment Lhotse jacket for two years now and it is the best all-around mountain jacket I’ve tried. This jacket is now the benchmark Mountain Gore-Tex shell on the market. The Hood ME have always had the best hoods on the market in my opinion, and this is the best of them. With a large wired peak and drawstrings which make the hood work like a mountain cap on the head; the greatest part of the design is that the hood is firm on the head,... Read More

Tested: Haglöfs Essens Mimic Jacket

As the name suggests this jacket mimics Goose down; with light weight, small pack size and warmth. But this jacket has synthetic insulation and therefore copes much better with moisture than a down jacket. Unlike other synthetic insulated jackets this has the same light and ‘toasty’ feel as down jackets. The High Loft Insulation in the jacket mimics the characteristics of down and is blown into the baffles, like a down jacket, which helps the fibre to loft like down and trap lots of air making you warm. It also... Read More

Tested: Marmot PreCip Jacket

This is the most comfortable lightweight waterproof jacket for multipurpose use on the market right now under the £160 price tag. The secret of the jacket is the Nanopore waterproof coating which keeps you comfortable in the jacket allowing air to pass through the jacket’s membrane while still being a very waterproof jacket. In summer conditions traditional waterproof breathable jackets don’t breath as well because they rely on a big temperature differential between the inside and outside of the jacket to drive the breathability. In summer this difference means less breathability;... Read More
