Whats the best Summer Waterproof Jacket?

Summer waterproof jackets are not just for rain. They can keep you warm and keep the wind out but more importantly they are light and pack down small so it’s easy to always have them with you in the outdoors. The right summer waterproof means you’ll always be ready for changeable weather conditions.

Here are some of our favourite lightweight and packable waterproof jackets for spring/summer use.

Patagonia Torrentshell 3L

Our best selling all around summer jacket is the new Patagonia Torrentshell 3L jacket. This jacket has been on the market for many years but has been massively upgraded this season, bringing it from a 2.5 layer to a 3 Layer shell which makes it more hard wearing, more breathable and nicer against the skin. The new version is a slightly heavier fabric than it’s predecessor, but It will last much longer, has a recycled face fabric and fulfils Patagonia’s environmental and best in category criteria.

Patagonia Rainshadow

If you want a more technical version of the Torrentshell jacket the Patagonia Rainshadow jacket has a stretch fabric and a chest pocket and water resist zips. The jacket has a slightly nicer fit due to the stretch fabric and has a more technical less lifestyle look to it.

Rab Meridian Jacket

Another all around jacket new for this season is the Rab Meridian jacket. With Gore-Tex Paclite Plus fabric the jacket is waterproof and breathable but also incredibly light at 340g. This jacket features a proper mountain hood with wired peak and high collar to keep the worst elements out. A great jacket if you want good all round performance in an incredibly light weight package.

Rab Kinetic Alpine Jacket

For fast and light activities or for incredible breath-ability the Rab Kinetic Alpine jacket is light, very stretchy and incredibly breathable. With a MVTR of 35,000 and 390g you can run or cycle in this jacket and treat it as a windproof because it is so breathable; with its stretchiness it feels incredibly comfortable but it is still 10,000mm waterproof. It is an ideal waterproof jacket for those looking to move fast, be that walking or running.

Rab Downpour Jacket

At the more budget end of the spectrum but still a really good jacket is the Rab Downpour jacket. This jacket is a 2.5 layer jacket with a dry touch inner (comfortable against the skin) it’s waterproof and breathable with over zip baffles and pit zips. All this makes it a very comfortable jacket but the wired peak and great hood make this the best £100 light weight jacket for trail or hill use.

Jack Wolfskin Stormy Point Jacket

If you are after a bargain for summer walking or a jacket for your holiday the Jack Wolfskin Stormy Point jacket is a great buy. It has a comfortable 2 layer inner with a drop liner; making it comfortable to wear. The jacket is JW’s Texapore so it’s waterproof and breathable and has a sensible hood and storm flaps over the zips. The jacket is a non athletic relaxed fit and has a nice to handle face fabric so looks neat on and fits most body shapes well.
