Tested: Rab Women’s Electron Jacket

When I was given the opportunity through work to trial a Rab Electron Women’s Jacket, I was intrigued and excited to try it out for myself, especially after selling these jackets to customers for many years. I have been aware of the high quality of Rab Equipment for several years, through seeing my Mum and fellow colleagues using the kit on a regular basis, for hill walking, mountaineering and skiing. The question is, what makes a good down jacket? The style, colour, durability, warmth? The Rab Electron Women’s jacket has... Read More

Tested: Rab Alpha Flux Jacket

I was lucky enough to get to test the Rab Alpha Flux Jacket. I was given it in November, probably a bit late in the year to get the full benefit, especially in the frozen North of Aberdeenshire. Anyway the first time I used it was on a mountain bike run on a fairly cool day and I loved it. The first thing I noticed when putting it on was the length. It has a slightly longer cut than a lot of modern garments which gives that little extra insulation... Read More

Tested: Rab Alpha Direct Jacket

I have used this jacket for a year now and it has become one of my favourite bits of kit. It’s warm comfy and regulates temperature better than anything else I have used. The face fabric is wind and water resistant, it’s light, packs down well, and drys off extremely fast. Alpha Polartec Alpha fabric came out a few years ago with a marketing campign showing pictures of sweaty people and the whole Alpha program trundled along without much interest. But the good people at Rab kept the faith with... Read More

Tested: Mountain Equipment Lhotse Jacket

I’ve been using the Mountain Equipment Lhotse jacket for two years now and it is the best all-around mountain jacket I’ve tried. This jacket is now the benchmark Mountain Gore-Tex shell on the market. The Hood ME have always had the best hoods on the market in my opinion, and this is the best of them. With a large wired peak and drawstrings which make the hood work like a mountain cap on the head; the greatest part of the design is that the hood is firm on the head,... Read More

Lifesystems EX4+ Antimosquito – The Best Way To Avoid Ticks In The Outdoors

The best way we have found to stop ticks getting onto you while having fun outdoors is to spray Permethrin on your boots, shoes, trousers and other clothing, letting it dry on before heading out. Ticks are killed as they travel across your clothing and treatment lasts 2 to 6 weeks. Tests have shown Permethrin is very effective against ticks when applied to clothing, it does not work on skin so an anti midge/tick treatment like Smidge is also best applied to exposed skin. Craigdon Mountain Sports sell Permethrin in... Read More

Tested: Maier Sports Nil Trousers

This 4 way stretch trouser is a great weight for spring/summer use, wearing the fabric feels light and cool rather than most 4 way stretch soft shell trousers which are too warm for summer walking. They have a bonded DWR which makes them very water resistant and stay like this as the treatment is in the fabric and not just sprayed on. This also makes them very stain resistant. They come with a belt and have a very handy roll up feature on the legs for hotter days and a... Read More
