New BOA Ski Boot Technology: A Game-Changer for Skier Comfort and Performance
BOA is a well-known name in the outdoor industry. Its signature dial closure system has been used on everything from ski helmets, snowboard boots, ski touring boots to cycling shoes. And now, BOA is coming to a downhill ski boot near you.
For the 2023-2024 season, Salomon, Atomic, K2, and Fischer will each debut a ski boot with an entirely new mold and BOA Fit System on the lower shell of the boot. These boots promise to offer some advantages over the classic four-buckle boot, including:
- Micro-adjustable fit: BOA dials allow for precise adjustments in 0.25mm increments, so you can get a truly dialed-in fit.
- Uniform wrap: BOA laces distribute pressure evenly around your foot, eliminating pressure points and providing a more comfortable fit.
- Superior heel hold and edge-to-edge control: The uniform wrap provided by BOA laces also helps to keep your heel locked in place, for better power transfer and edge control.
- Durability: BOA laces are made from high-strength materials and are designed to withstand the rigors of alpine skiing.
- Easier to use: BOA dials are much easier to use than traditional buckles, especially when wearing gloves or in cold weather conditions.
If you’re in the market for a new pair of alpine ski boots, be sure to check out the new BOA offerings. They may just be the best boots you’ve ever skied in.
BOA Fit System in action
BOA ski boots use a system of laces, dials, and guides to tighten the boot around the foot. The laces are made of a strong and lightweight material and they are threaded through the guides in a unique way that creates a uniform and even closure. The dials are used to micro-adjust the tension of the laces, allowing for a precise fit.
COOL FACT – the BOA alpine fit system wire lace has a core made from nineteen strands of stainless steel, wrapped in an additional 90 strands. Tensile strength >254 kg to hold up in the toughest conditions. Probably strong enough to hold a chair lift.
One way to visualise how the fit system works is to clasp your hands in a loose circle. Notice how your fingers naturally overlap with one hand resting on top of the other. Move your hands closer together to tighten the circle, the shape remains intact. This motion is what the BOA Fit System technology mimics. As you twist the BOA dial tighter – Click, Click, Click – the boot envelops your foot, akin to the movement of your hands overlapping.
Not tight, just right
Even when traditional buckle Ski Boots fit well many skiers struggle with the fit above their midfoot, particularly where the plastic shell overlaps. When the lower shell buckles are cinched tightly, some skiers feel like the top of their foot is being crushed.
When tightened a ski boot with the precise 0.25mm adjustments of the BOA dial, the cable snugs up around the metatarsals without lowering the height over the instep. It’s all about getting your foot closer to the boot, not cinching down the ceiling of the boot.
BOA’s on and off snow testing found a 13% reduction in peak pressures and pressure variation on top of the foot. But that’s not all the system achieved. Power transfer from boot to ski has increased by 4-6% in peak forces compared to your classic four-buckle boot.
If you are looking for a new pair of ski boots, be sure to consider BOA. You won’t be disappointed.
